Time Magazine’s 2007 Top 50 Websites proves publishing world is out of touch

How frustrating it is, living in a world where most of those with any semblance of computer literacy are not of a ripe enough age to bail the world of publishing out of its age gap-induced bewilderment. Publishers seem to suffer from a cyber confusion that pales in insignificance only next to the general hubris that will not let them admit they need help - help from the young’uns who grew up with this stuff.

Case in point: Time’s 50 Best Websites of 2007. Topping the list was a site I had never even heard of, mozy. It’s an online file storage service with a $5 per month subscription fee. That means that after 12 months, customers have spent roughly the cost of a decent 160GB external hard drive. That’s your number one, Time? File storage?

The rest of the top five were StumbleUpon (online ADD enabler), Last.FM (almost as good as Pandora), Weebly (Websites for dummies) and Etsy (online arts/crafts emporium).

This list is about as meaningful as Madonna’s induction into the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame. Misguided at best. What about Digg, which didn’t even making the list? Maybe Digg isn’t as flashy a Website as StarWars.com (number 46), but it stands as just about the top online source for up-to-date news.

Come on, Time, get with it.

I completely stopped paying attention to Time some years back when they named George W Bush as their ‘man of the year’. I completely agree with you about how irrelevant Time and most main stream publishers have become. Though this is Not news to me.

On the whole, Time did a creditable job of letting us know more of what they are. But they missed TinyTots.com How could they? TinyTots is in the forefront of diaper exchange programs, and all of the tots pictured on the site have the kind of moronic grin and look of pop-eyed optimism shared by Time’s readers. Can’t wait till next year. Perhaps we’ll get to see Time’s list of the top 10 animals of 2007.

I suppose they ignored the mainstream websites as that would’ve been too obvious.

HAHAHAHA… seriously… I’d much rather buy an external HD than pay for online storage. Hell, theres even FREE online storage from a number of websites. What would be even more practical though is buy a little 2GB USB drive that can fit in your eyelashes or behind your ear… (meaning its really small and can carry it anywhere…)

That just goes to show that people who actually use the internet are smart(er), and those who dont…are not.
